I’m so excited to be a guest participant in the Fall 2021 One Room Challenge! This is my first time participating, although I’ve loved following along with the designs others bring to life in past challenges. There are so many awesome people in the Fall 2021 Challenge, and you can follow along with them on the ORC Blog.

Behold, our laundry room. It’s relatively functional, but it is a pretty tight squeeze. The door doesn’t open all the way, the last boob light in the house is hanging out in there, and frankly, it just needs a little love. It seems like a good target for my first ever One Room Challenge.

The whole mood board started with a light fixture. I was browsing around one day, saw the fixtures from Illuminate Vintage, and knew that was the key part of a future laundry room makeover. I also had gotten some samples from CaraGreen and loved the idea of including some more eco-friendly materials in this makeover. Finally, I totally thought I was going to paint the laundry room a moody green. That part of the plan didn’t stick.

With a full set of laundry room measurements and my original mood board, I started doing a draft visualization in SketchUp. The green on the walls with the stained wood cabinets started to feel really dark, a vibe I love for many rooms but not for this tiny laundry room. Then, as you can see from this picture, I started experimenting with the idea of painting the cabinets. It’s something I’ve never done before but I’m looking forward to trying.

So, using my new ColorReader, I decided to get the existing color of the laundry room walls and see how that fit with the design. It was super easy to point it at the wall and quickly get a color.

That, plus some browsing and planning for how we really use the laundry room, brings us to our current plan. The laundry room is going to be light and bright with painted cabinets and brass and black touches to play off the light fixture. There will be eco-friendly and natural elements and the organization will be updated for what makes the most use of the small space.

This drying rack was already in the room, but when it was open to hold laundry, it bumped into the door. I went ahead and removed it since it wasn’t the best fit for our laundry. Also in the laundry room, we have this smart closet that is basically the main connection point for our internet. I have some plans for an update here too as part of the ORC.

Last part of the week was putting up these paint samples from Samplize and picking a cabinet color. I’m so excited to get started painting!
