This is the fifth week of the Fall 2022 One Room Challenge. Thank you so much for visiting!
All the guest participant links can be found on the One Room Challenge blog! You can also visit the week 5 link up page directly here. This is an awesome event where everyone supports each other and has a great time working towards their own goals in these 8 weeks, so I hope you check out lots of participants!
Remember this inspiration picture from @maxmademedoit of a bright warm color over picture rail, with a darker moodier base? To me, it seemed like it would be like having a permanent sunrise in the room, which felt like the perfect energy for this space.

Picture rail molding was surprisingly tricky to find locally, but I found what I needed at NewMouldings.com. We went with the 2-1/4” height profile, because since this was the main detail and it was higher up on the wall, I really wanted it to stand out. The poplar wood would be great for the painted finish we were going for, too. Everything arrived quickly and it was packed really securely, so I definitely will use the site again if I can’t find a type of trim locally.
In the gym, we have windows, two doors, and the Murphy bed, all of which are at different heights. We wanted the picture rail to look like it met (or avoided) each of these intentionally, instead of only being a little bit offset. After some very scientific holding the molding up in the air to guesstimate, and then Matt doing much more scientific measuring with the laser distance tape, we decided that the bottom of the picture rail should be 20” from the ceiling.

I am so glad to have found a great contractor to work with, and he and his team were a huge help getting this next stage of the room done. They installed the picture rail molding with really nice scarf joints where pieces met, and everything was caulked and ready for paint the next day. They also did a great job with the painting, even with our major hiccup with the first round of paint.

I’m not sure how easy it is to see in this picture versus when we were standing in the room with shop lights, but this is four coats of paint later. We’re not sure what happened with our initial gallon of paint, but it just was not covering. There are places where the coverage was better, like where they cut in, and on the lighter wood trim, but you can still see the gray through the coral paint after all the rounds of painting!
After making the call that “one more coat” probably wouldn’t cut it, we went on a late-night paint errand to get a new gallon from a different brand. So, the accent color in here is now, officially, Watermelon Slice by Behr. And wouldn’t you know it, after one coat of that the next day, we had a perfect solid finish.
This picture rail molding and bright coral paint is probably one of the biggest changes for this room design, and I can’t stop smiling when I see it. It really is like having a beautiful sunrise inside, no matter what the weather is outside. I’m so glad we went for something out of our comfort zone with this color.

Even though we were delayed a bit by the first paint we picked, I think this was worth the wait. We have the wallpaper to do on the Murphy bed still, but you can already see how the bright flowers tie into the accent color on the walls. After that, it’s lots of little finishing touches to bring the room together! Thank you for following along with us!
