Here’s a picture of Moxxi on the day we moved in, helping to illustrate one of the functional things we wanted to tweak about the gym.
There were already blinds in the gym, like most of the rooms of the house, and they were fine. However, there were two things we thought could be better. For one, these blinds were a dark gray to match the walls, and we wanted something brighter for this space for working out before or after work. The other thing is that this room is on the front of the house on the ground floor, and we have a great walkable neighborhood… where neighbors could look right in if we had the blinds open for more light.I did a lot of shopping around for blinds, and we had to make the decision about if we wanted automated blinds or the top-down/bottom-up blinds. In the end, the ability to have a lot of natural light in the room while still keeping our privacy was our main priority. Blinds.com had a ton of great options for us to select for these blackout cellular shades. We went with a 1/2” double cell shade in Cotton, for efficiently blocking out light and heat for those North Carolina summers. It’s a big plus for us that these are cordless, too, because we want to keep cords away from Moxxi and she is usually pretty skilled at getting past defenses.

Having the ability to open these blinds from the top is a huge improvement for this room, It’s so much brighter and cheerier throughout the day. We can also raise them from the bottom if we want, for Moxxi to be able to look out at the world.

This week, we also swapped out the door knobs and wall plates. The door knobs were pretty basic brushed nickel before. Since we’ve used the Schlage Bowery line with a different trim for some nearby doors in our house, the Bowery with Plymouth trim knobs were an easy choice. I love the modern lines of the knobs, and the Plymouth trim adds a nice detail without being overpowering on the double doors. Our wall plates were previously the standard white plastic, and we replaced them with matte black wall plates from Franklin Brass in the Classic Architecture pattern. I’m working on sourcing some similar blank wall plates for the wall conduit and coax boxes from when this room used to be an office. Swapping out door and wall hardware is a really easy way to change up the look of a room!
